Many many hours went into Directed Study #2. That was the constant theme throughout the Spring of '08. From early February, through late June, a new digital matte painting a week was needed to stay on schedule to complete the final project on time.

The main purpose of Directed Study No. 2 was to create the necessary digital matte paintings for each of the nine sections for the final project. Each matte painting featuring a different decade along the way.

Several tests were conducted along the way to make sure that the files were set up in a manner that my workflow would be as seamless as possible come the Fall semester. These included many After Effects passes, and even an unexpected, but beneficial, Flash pass.

The large format of the matte paintings rendered my old workhorse laptop obsolete. I would need something much beefier, and in early March with some help, I built my trusty workstation which included dual 3.67GB Processors, 8GB of RAM, a 512 NVIDIA Graphics Card, and a full terabyte of Hard Drive space. This helped ensure that the digital process went smoothly.

My goal of finishing all 9 matte paintings fell just sort, as the first matte painting is not yet complete, but should be ready for the Fall semester after I figure out how Chicago will look in the final project.

Big thanks goes out to Alan Sonneman, my advisor for the 15 weeks of Directed Study 2. His advice, mentoring, and persistence made sure that I kept on track and produced at a high level through the spring.
